“By the brass: pay the tithe, or be rendered down to pay it.”
A Prospect is not yet a raiding party. It is the survey sent ahead of the slave-caravans — to chart the roads, assay the plunder, and mark the ruins of men for harvests still to come. This one is leaner than most: five lords of Zharr and a mob of slaves, and nothing in between. It is named, as such expeditions are, for the sorcerer who answers for it, and who answers to Hashut should it fail.
When the wyrdstone comet shattered over the lands of men, the Temple of Hashut saw not a curse but a once-in-an-age vein of raw power — fuel for sorcery, for daemon-binding, for the great furnaces of Zharr-Naggrund. Drazhâk volunteered; he had little choice. The Curse of Stone takes him early, and a petrifying sorcerer is a poor investment. So he wagered his ruin against the richest find in memory. The Temple granted the Prospect — as a tithe-debt: return with wyrdstone in weight and a ledger of cruelties worthy of the Father of Darkness, or be unmade and rendered down like any failed casting. He came to the City of the Damned to buy back his own body. The ledger keeps the score.
